New technologies to separate O2 from air with an aim to reduce the production cost for industrial use have captured the imagination of many academic and industrial researchers, as most large scale clean energy technologies require O2 as the feed. Current tonnage O2 production by cryogenic process is expensive and energy intensive because it operates at very low temperature and at elevated pressures. Dense mixed oxygen ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) ceramic membranes offer potential to separate O2 from air with a significant reduction of O2 production cost. In this presentation, the speaker will give an overview of the progress of his group in the area of ceramic membranes for oxygen separation including early fundamental studies, recent scaling up and future directions.
